In the Terminal app on your Mac, use the mv command to move files or folders from one location to another on the same computer. The mv command moves the file or folder from its old location and puts it in the new location. For example, to move a file from your Downloads folder to a Work folder in your Documents folder. From the command line, you use the cd (or change directory) command instead. So let’s say you’re in your Home folder and want to peek inside the Downloads folder. To do that, you’d type cd.
Mac Terminal Change to Directory on External Drive
Here is how to
cd (change directory) into an external drive using Terminal on Mac computers. The trick is knowing the name of the drive and where it is located. On Macs, all connected drives (including hidden drives) are mounted/located under the /Volumes https://tweetsclever464.weebly.com/blog/download-mac-os-mojave-app-store. directory. So we can use this information to get the names of all drives:
![]()
So that would look something like this when entered in Terminal:
This gives us the information we need (the drive name) to then
cd change directory into any drive. For example, to change to the external/USB drive named Drive 1 , we can get there like this:
![]()
Note: In this example, because the drive name contains a blank space, we escaped it with a backslash
.
Bonus Tip
To get more information about your connected drives, use
diskutil Disk Utility list command: Download mac os x on usb.
